The burette is an elongated graduated tube having a stopcock attached to its bottom end. In analytical chemistry, it is used to deliver a predetermined quantity of liquid, especially the titrating agent in a process called titration. The quantity delivered is calculated from the initial and final readings taken from the meniscus of the liquid with respect to the graduations on the scale, hence why the quality of a burette is determined by three things accuracy of the graduations, precision of the tap, and visibility of the meniscus.

How do you choose a burette?

Titration error comes from three places, and each one is something you buy rather than something you fix later: the glass, the tap, and the eye.

The glass is the accuracy class — how closely the graduations match true volume. The tap is the stopcock, which controls the drop rate and, if it leaks or seizes, introduces a silent systematic error. The eye is the meniscus reading, the largest source of student error in a teaching laboratory and the one a Schellbach stripe is designed to reduce.

A fourth question sits underneath all three: capacity and graduation interval. A 50 mL burette graduated in 0.1 mL divisions and a 10 mL burette graduated in 0.02 mL are different instruments for different titrations, and no capacity or graduation interval is published for any line in this category. What does Class B mean, and when do you need better?

Class B is the general-purpose accuracy grade — appropriate for teaching titrations, routine work and demonstration. What is a Schellbach stripe?

A Schellbach stripe is a coloured line fused into the back wall of the burette tube behind a milky-white band. Refraction through the meniscus pinches the stripe into a sharp point exactly at the liquid surface, so the reading is taken from a point rather than a curve.

It measurably reduces reading error and disagreement between students, which is why it is worth specifying for teaching laboratories even where the accuracy class stays the same. Two lines carry it: the Schellbach burette and the automatic Schellbach burette, both stated as borosilicate glass.

Graduation colour matters for the same reason. The Class B PTFE key line is stated as printed in amber-coloured enamel; other glassware on this site uses white enamel. Amber and white read differently against different bench and lighting conditions, so specify the colour you want rather than accepting whichever ships.

Which stopcock should you specify?

Three stopcock types are stocked, and the choice affects both control and maintenance.

A PTFE key stopcock needs no grease, resists most reagents and will not seize in storage — the practical default for a school or college that cannot guarantee the burettes get cleaned properly at the end of every term.

A PTFE needle valve gives the finest drop-by-drop control, which matters at the endpoint of a titration where a half-drop changes the result.

A glass stopcock is the traditional ground-glass fitting. It is matched to its own barrel, needs greasing, and can seize if left dry — and a seized or leaking glass stopcock is the most common reason a school burette goes out of service.

One further line states only "a leakproof stopcock" without naming the type. Ask which it is before ordering.

What is an automatic burette, and what else does it need?

An automatic burette refills itself to the zero mark from a reservoir below or beside it, so the operator does not top up and re-zero by hand between titrations. It suits repeat titrations — a class running the same determination thirty times, or a QC bench running a daily series.

An automatic burette is not a standalone item. It needs a reservoir bottle, connecting tubing and usually a bulb or pump to charge it, and no reservoir set is listed in this category. How is a burette mounted?
